Honey bees, wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets are all insects, and they can often be mistaken for each other due to their similar sizes and colors. However, each group has distinct characteristics:
Honey Bees (Genus Apis): Honey bees are important pollinators that produce honey and beeswax. They have a fuzzy, rounded body with a more muted yellow-brown to dark brown color. Honey bees live in large colonies in hives, are generally non-aggressive unless their hive is threatened, and can sting only once as the act usually results in their death.
Wasps (Family Vespidae, which also includes Yellow Jackets and Hornets): Wasps have slender bodies with a narrow waist, a pointed lower abdomen, and a smooth, shiny surface. They range in color from metallic blue to bright red or yellow and black. Wasps are predators and feed on other insects. Unlike honey bees, wasps can sting multiple times.
Yellow Jackets (Genus Vespula or Dolichovespula): Yellow jackets are a type of wasp and have a similar body structure. However, their distinguishing feature is their bright yellow and black banded coloration. Yellow jackets are often more aggressive than other wasps and can also sting multiple times. They often nest underground or in cavities, including in structures like attics.
Hornets (Genus Vespa): Hornets are the largest type of wasp, with some species reaching up to 5.5 cm in length. Hornets have a similar body shape to wasps but are often larger and have a brownish or reddish-brown coloration. Like wasps, hornets are capable of stinging multiple times. The European hornet is the only true hornet found in North America; other insects commonly called hornets, such as the bald-faced hornet, are actually a type of yellowjacket.
It’s important to remember that all these insects play critical roles in the ecosystem, but they can be a nuisance or even dangerous if they are in areas with high human traffic, or for individuals who are allergic to their stings. Always approach them with caution.

During the summer, carpenter ants swarm in search of new nests and mate, increasing their activity. The presence of moisture after a wet and cold spring causes carpenter ants to swarm in New York and Long Island.
Carpenter ants are small reddish-brown ants found in all parts of the world. They nest in woodpiles and woodfences, but they live in warmer regions as well. They collect wood fibers to eat and leave behind sawdust trails when foraging. Carpenter ants construct their nests in cracks and crevices, and they may include soil or other debris. To get to food and shelter, Carpenter ants bite through wooden structures.
